BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Despite two fumbles in the second half by running back Leonard Fournette, No. 20 LSU held on to beat Mississippi State 23-20 in its SEC opener Saturday night at Tiger Stadium.

Fournette carried the ball 28 times for 147 yards and two touchdowns. He even threw a pass, but it was an incompletion.

In his first start for the Tigers, quarterback Danny Etling completed 19 of his 30 attempts for 215 yards and a touchdown. The score came on a 37-yard pass to wide receiver D.J. Chark in the first quarter.

Etling distributed the ball to just about every player possible. Seven different Tigers caught passes. Malachi Dupre led them with four catches for 54 yards. Travin Dural and Fournette also each caught four passes. Chark had three catches for 52 yards. He also took care of the ball by not turning it over and ran three times for 23 yards, including a 12-yard scamper.

LSU's defense recorded six sacks in the game.
