LIVINGSTON PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

According to the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office (LPSO), two people were arrested in connection with a theft complaint at Christ Community Church on Juban Rd. on September 11.

"This location was being used as a shelter for displaced flood victims and a distribution center at the time of the incident. Two people tried to take advantage of the kindness of those volunteering in that shelter. This duo created a ruse to distract those working the shelter. They told volunteers that someone had fallen ill and needed immediate attention in another part of the facility. That was a lie. While volunteers attempted to attend to a sick individual, the pair stole two purses. Through investigation, LPSO detectives were able to recover the stolen purses and the contents inside," said Sheriff Jason Ard.

Leslie L. Burch, 33, and Robert K. Johnson, 36, were both arrested. Burch is charged with two counts of illegal possession of stolen things, possession of marijuana, theft of a firearm, and felony theft.

Johnson is charged with two counts of illegal possession of stolen things, possession of marijuana, theft of a firearm, driving under suspension, and insurance required.

Both have their bond set at $7,500.

The investigation is ongoing.
