SATSUMA, LA (WAFB) -

Authorities said a driver died after hitting a horse and a tree early Friday morning.

Louisiana State Police identified the victim as Joshua Marange, 24, of Denham Springs.

Troopers reported the crash happened on US 190 east of Satsuma Road near Satsuma around 1 a.m.

Tpr. Bryan Lee with LSP said the investigation up to this point showed Marange was driving a 2000 Buick Park Avenue on US 190 East when the car hit a horse that was standing on the highway.

He added the impact caused severe damage to the car, which went off the road and finally came to a stop after hitting a tree.

According to Lee, Marange was pronounced dead at the scene by the Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office.

Investigators said impairment is not suspected as a factor, but per protocol for deadly crashes on Louisiana highways, a sample of Marange’s blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

They added the horse also died in the crash and troopers are trying to find the owner.
