To say it was an emotional night for the purple and gold of Denham Springs Friday night would be an understatement. The second Sportsline Player of the Week for the 2016 season fed off and helped create the excitement for a Yellow Jackets team that represents the flood-torn community.
"It's really for my city. After what we went through the past few weeks, and everything that was going on, it just felt good," said junior running back Tyre Golmond.
Golmond sparked his team right out of the gate against Tara by taking a direct snap and dashing 42 yards to the end zone to break the ice.
From there Golmond finished off an incredible first quarter while ESPN was spotlighting his school, scoring two more touchdowns on the ground and a fourth that was thrown in the air on a 24-yard pass reception.
In fact, No. 4 had four touchdowns and 24 yards was his average on just five carries as Denham Springs demolished the Trojans to the delight of their fans, 47-0.
"Something the team needed. You know we wanted to have a quick start and Tyre's a very explosive player and you know, one of the most experienced guys we have," said head coach Dru Nettles. "We snapped it to him like a quarterback there to start the game, and you know when he gets the ball in his hands in space, special things happen. Just proud of our team and Tyre, one of the leaders in that group to play through the adversity, through the tough times we had. And with all the attention and the spotlight on that game, for our guys to go out and play well."
"It's just big because they had the crowd behind us, you know with everything that was going on you know ESPN, just that night made it special," Golmond said.
