The Southern Jaguars make their 2016 debut in Mumford Stadium Saturday night against the Alabama State Hornets.
Both teams enter the game looking for their first victory of the season.
The Hornets lost their opener to University of Texas - San Antonio, 26-13, and fell to Alcorn State, 21-18, during the second game of the season.
Alabama State is averaging only 285 yards of offense per game, while giving up just under 400 yards a game on defense.
Running back Khalid Thomas leads the Hornets in rushing with 19 carries for 115 yards. He is averaging 6.1 yards per rush and has scored 1 touchdown on the ground and two from the air.
Two quarterbacks have played for the Hornets this season. Quinterris Toppings is 11 for 26 from the air for 109 yards with three touchdown passes, and Ju Young-Battle is 11 for 18 for 102 yards.
Josh Davis leads the receiving corp with six catches for 52 yards.
Defensively, ASU is led by Therron Presley and Darron Johnson. Each player has 13 tackles, and Johnson also has a sack after two games.
Senior linebacker Kourtney Berry, the SWAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, returned to action against Alcorn State after missing the season opener. He finished with 10 tackles, a stop behind the line and forced two fumbles. After a dominant performance against the Braves, he earned SWAC Defensive Player of the Week.
An interesting note, in the first two games the Hornets have been outscored 13-0 after halftime.
Saturday's kickoff is set 6 p.m. in Mumford Stadium.
