Danny Etling got his shot as quarterback for LSU and helped lead the Tigers to win 34-13 over Jacksonville State in the home opener at Tiger Stadium.
Junior quarterback Brandon Harris started the game for the Tigers, but Etling, another junior quarterback, came in for the second quarter and led LSU to three straight scoring drives.
Etling was 6 of 14 throws for 100 yards with one touchdown pass and one interception. He also had a two-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Harris was only 1 of 4 passes for 8 yards in the first quarter.
The Tigers (1-1) were missing Heisman hopeful Leonard Fournette. The junior running back was sidelined for Jacksonville State (1-1) after re-injuring his ankle at the end of the Wisconsin loss. In his place, Derrius Guice stepped up to fill the void with 155 rushing yards on 19 carries, including a 4-yard touchdown run.
Senior cornerback Tre'Davious White returned a punt for a 60-yard touchdown that was more like 81 yards as he first gave up ground, going back 20 yards, to avoid tacklers.
LSU's home opener was delayed nearly an hour by severe weather as the kickoff time, which was originally set for 6:30 p.m., was pushed back to 7:25 p.m.
This is the second straight home opener that has been in a weather delay. Last year, LSU's home and season opener against McNeese State was in a weather delay before being eventually canceled.
The Tigers open SEC play at home against Mississippi State next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. with the game airing on ESPN 2.
