DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (WAFB) - Football season is back on for Southside Junior High in Denham Springs.
The team is sitting on $20,000 worth of donations for new gear after their old equipment was washed out by the flood.
Head coach Brett Chatelain said because of the damaged gear, they nearly had to forgo the season.
"A lot of smiles. We were practicing the last couple of days just in shorts and t-shirts when I told them I wasn't sure if we were going to get any equipment in and when they walked in, I wish y'all could have seen the expressions on their face when they walked in, but their eyes really lit up," Chatelain said.
Someone posted the news to social media and the donations poured in. NFL players Charles Tillman and Benjamin Watson gave $5,000 each.
Chatelain said they will find a way to spend every penny on the team.
