ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

Many people have questioned whether they need to raise their home when they rebuild and the top official in one parish made an announcement Friday morning related to that very issue.

Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa said parts of a grade requirement ordinance have been suspended for 30 days in his parish.

The ordinance requires all structures be built to a minimum of one foot above FEMA base flood elevation or the record inundation, whichever is higher.

However, Matassa suspended the record inundation requirement. He said he's trying to keep those hit hard by the flood who want to rebuild from suffering any more.

He added he spoke with FEMA and DOTD and those officials agreed that as long as residents rebuild one foot above base flood elevation, they shouldn't have a problem with flood insurance.
