ETHEL, LA (WAFB) - On Sunday, August 28, around 3 a.m., Chelsea Wayne Smith, 42, attempted to murder his wife, Jennifer.
Jennifer advised that after a verbal argument, Chelsea entered their bedroom where she was lying in bed holding a phone conversation with her daughter, who said she heard a loud clap over the phone. The daughter advised that she believed the sound was that of Chelsea striking her mother.
Jennifer then screamed for her daughter to call the police. According to Jennifer, Chelsea stood at the end of the bed, pointed a black rifle at her, and pulled the trigger without hesitation. She advised he then approached her and placed the muzzle of the weapon against her forehead.
Chelsea then supposedly threatened to post "unflattering" photos of Jennifer on the internet if she did not obey him. He also advised her that if anyone in the family contacted law enforcement, he would return and kill "all of them." Jennifer advised that her family consists of herself, her adult daughter, and a juvenile son.
Chelsea then fled from the residence prior to officers arriving. Jennifer provided law enforcement with a description of the vehicle Chelsea fled in and a possible destination. Chelsea's vehicle was located traveling north on Old Scenic at a high rate of speed, exceeding 100 mph. Chelsea then abruptly stopped the vehicle on Hwy. 955 in Ethel and fled into some woods on foot.
A spend .22 caliber shell casing was recovered at the foot of the bed at the residence. A bullet hold was also observed in the wall at the head of the bed. Two .22 caliber firearms were recovered in the cab of Chelsea's truck as well. Neither of the weapons fit the description given by Jennifer. Further investigation revealed that Chelsea is a convicted felon and is not legally allowed to be in possession of a firearm.
Jennifer disregarded the advice of law enforcement and is not taking any protective measures to ensure her own safety. She has returned to the residence and is believed to have contacted Chelsea in an attempt to aid him.
A warrant was issued for Chelsea's arrest and he was taken into custody on Monday, August 29. He is charged with attempted second degree murder with domestic abuse, three counts of possession of a firearm by a felon, illegal use of weapons, aggravated flight from an officer, three counts of aggravated assault, and extortion.
