The three pumps are still working to drain water from Spanish Lake in Ascension Parish two days after officials cut into the Alligator Bayou levee. However, Iberville Sheriff Brett Stassi said they have only seen water recede a few inches on the Iberville side.
About 50 to 60 Iberville Parish residents still have floodwaters in their homes along Manchac Road.
"Iberville Parish residents haven't been able to start cleaning up," Stassi said. "In fact, we are still pumping around sandbags, keeping the water out of houses as we speak today. So to get this water out of Spanish Lake is of the utmost importance and also to get it out of the women's prison on the east side."
Officials are ready to cut the levee on the Iberville side, but they are not sure what the upcoming storm will do so they are holding off until engineers come in to assess the situation.
Sheriff Stassi said they are in "storm" mode, preparing for a potential hurricane.
