ZACHARY, LA (WAFB) - Rescue crews in Zachary recovered the body of a 68-year-old man who drowned while trying to escape flood waters at his Zachary home, a witness reports.
"Me and my son and another guy tried to get him but it was too late," said Vernon Drummond, the roommate of the victim
Crews were dispatched around 10:30 a.m. to the 1700 block of Plank Road just south of Highway 64. The search crew included the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, EMS and Zachary Fire Department.
"We were in the trailer just watching TV and then the water just started coming up," Drummond said. "We were walking out and he slipped and fell. He went under the water. We tried to save him, but we couldn't."
Drummond said the victim is originally from Los Angeles and does not have any family in the area. Officials have not yet confirmed the name of the victim.
The Zachary Police Department reported a curfew is in place for the city until further notice. Chief David McDavid is asking everyone to stay off the roads unless it is an emergency.
