OPELOUSAS, LA (WAFB) - A businessman will present the Opelousas Police Department with 55 bullet resistant vests on Tuesday.
Bob Giles, who owns car dealerships in the Acadiana area, including Opelousas, donated $35,000 for the purchase of the vests.
"We cannot show enough gratitude to Bob Giles," Police Chief Donald Thompson said in a written release. "With the rash of police shootings around the country these bullet proof vests could not have arrived at a better time."
"I made the donation to help save the lives of our local heroes and help them feel more secure when they go out to do their job protecting our community," Giles added. "The arrival of the bullet proof vests came at a much needed time."
A news conference will be held at 10 a.m. at the Opelousas Police Department for the presentation of the vests.
