The Yellow Jackets of Oak Forest in Amite just missed out on another state title last year as the Class 4A MAIS state runners-up.
This year, Oak Forest returns senior quarterback Jude Giardina and several key pieces on offense, but is missing 12 seniors including its entire defensive line.
"I hope, and hope's a poor strategy, but I hope that we'll be physical. I think that we will be aggressive on defense. I want hard-nosed defense," said head coach Jason Brabham. "The 'Killer Bees' is our old motto. That's been our tradition on defense and I want those guys to step forward and make great plays and big hits and swarm the football."
Senior running back Dalton Brabham, who is the coach's son, will no doubt be featured as he was a big part of last year's Yellow Jackets who rebounded from the loss of 17 seniors to make the finals.
The offensive line returns three senior starters Oak Forest just added a brand new receiver, Christian Bach from Finland. But despite the new blood, Oak Forest figures to go back to emphasizing its roots.
"And then you know offensively I look for us to be more physical, more old school," Coach Brabham said. "We'll be in the I a lot. We're gonna run the football between the tackles a lot. You know we have two backs over 200 pounds, so we look for them to be able to pound that rock between the tackles."
