GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - Kids got to enjoy a free haircut at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales on Sunday. Local stylists and barbers donated their time to make sure that every kid is looking their best for the start of school.
"The purpose that I do this for is not only to give back as far as a service, but also to put that confidence in them because some kids don't know who they are, they don't know that they're handsome or that they're beautiful, and that's just to build their self esteem back up," said Ynohtna Turead, the organizer of the event.
This is the eighth year of "Back to School in Style" event, which is put together by the Anointed Hands Center. Organizers and volunteers say they want to give back to the community and help families that may be experiencing financial hardship.
"They already have the expense of school supplies," Turead said. "They have, you know their own personal bills, and this just helps them out by one less thing they have to do."
Many parents say they've been coming to this event for years because they feel their children really enjoy it.
"They see a lot of people from the community coming out and they get to do a one-on-one actually because they really have to spend a lot of time to get you know, what they need done," Josephine Mendoza said.
Over 100 people attended the event. Organizers say they definitely want to bring it back for a ninth year.
