HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) -

Authorities are investigating a pedestrian crash that resulted in the death of a woman early Thursday morning.

Louisiana State Police identified the victim as Karen Phillips, 45, of Independence.

Troopers reported the crash happened on US 51 in Hammond around 4:30 a.m.

Tpr. Dustin Dwight said the investigation up to this point showed Phillips was walking in a lane on the highway when she was hit by a car. He added the impact threw Phillips about 100 feet.

Dwight stated Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office.

Investigators reported the driver of the car is not suspected of impairment and has not been charged.

They added per procedure for deadly crashes on Louisiana highways, blood samples from the driver and the victim were sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

The investigation is ongoing.
