IBERIA PARISH, LA (WAFB) - The body of the pilot and the helicopter that crashed in the Atchafalaya Basin on Wednesday have been found, according to a report by KATC-TV.
Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal reportedly told the Lafayette television station that the pilot's body was located shortly after the helicopter wreckage was discovered Thursday morning. It is believed the pilot was the only person on board. The victim's name has not been released, but has been identified as a 29-year-old male.
The helicopter disappeared Wednesday during a pipeline survey. According to a report by KLFY-TV, also in Lafayette, Ackal told the station the wreckage was found near the Iberia Parish-St. Mary Parish line not far from the pipeline.
The FAA told KATC that the helicopter was heading to Patterson from Gonzales, which is the last known position of the aircraft. It was reported missing shortly after 4 p.m.
The aircraft is owned by Gulf Coast Helicopters in Pearland, Texas. Mike Acuna, director of operations with the company, confirmed to the Raycom News Network Wednesday night that he was in communication with the Iberia Parish sheriff.
