BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Baton Rouge CHEF Patriots cruised to an undefeated regular season last year, culminating in a Louisiana Home School state championship.
They will be led this year by two senior running backs, Colyn Petry and Ethan Costa. Costa rushed for more than a thousand yards in 2015, and the two combined for 21 touchdowns.
Head coach Ernie Butitta said the program is looking to challenge themselves this season out of district. CHEF will matchups against MAIS teams like Central Private in Week 1 and Glenbrook Academy in Minden late in the season.
"First game on schedule is Central Private, and for the first week that's a good test and we're just looking to see where we stack up," Butitta said. " That was intention, just cause I knew that we were gonna have upperclassmen and I wanted them to fight and have stiff competition especially their last year."
The Patriots kick off their home schedule August 25 at Olympia against the team they beat 58-0 in the state title game, Acadiana Home School.
The question lies at the quarterback position as the Patriots look to replace Timothy Costa, who combined to rush and pass for nearly 900 yards and 14 touchdowns last season.
"We're actually going to have two, one of them is Tanner Landers and then we also have Cole Shipley that's coming off the bench," Butitta said. "So we're working in and breaking in some guys who have taken snaps but nothing with heavy competition so all those guys stand to be leaders."
