BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The head of Louisiana schools delivered good news to parents and teachers Friday, saying the state has the largest high school graduation rate in history.
State Superintendent of Education John White said despite that good news, students face new challenges following graduation.
He said high school needs to do a better job of preparing students to either take a job or enroll in college.
White also said a quality education too often comes down to how much money parents have to spend.
"We have to close these ugly achievement gaps that exist in our state. That's the work our educators are committed to," White said. "I'm very encouraged with the momentum we have that we will solve that challenge."
White said the biggest challenge headed into the new year is to keep expectations high in the classroom. He said the state has more students choosing college than ever before.
