OPELOUSAS, LA (WAFB) - Bob Giles of Giles Automotive recently made a $35,000 donation for the Opelousas Police Department to purchase 55 bullet proof vests.
Giles' donation will provide a vest for every officer on the force.
"We cannot show enough gratitude to Bob Giles. With the rash of police shootings around the country, these bullet proof vests could not have arrived at a better time," said Chief Donald Thompson of the Opelousas Police Department.
Over 30 police officers have died by gunfire in the U.S. in 2016. Many of those lives could have been saved by a bullet proof vest. The arrival of these vests will allow the Opelousas Police Department to feel safer in their already stressful and dangerous job.
"I made the donation to help save the lives of our local heroes and help them feel more secure when they go out to do their job protecting our community. The arrival of the bullet proof vests came at a much needed time," said Giles.
Giles added, "The courageous officers in every state need the support of their communities. I encourage all business owners, large and small, and especially my brothers in the car business to donate to their local Police Departments. We must do our part to ensure that police officers are provided the necessary tools and equipment to feel safe and secure while protecting, serving, and saving the lives of Americans throughout the nation."
