Rep. James is a staunch supporter of public education, healthcare for all citizens, and prides himself on being a voice for the working people of Louisiana. James has co-sponsored legislation with republican colleagues and has a record of bi-partisanship. However, he does not shy away from addressing issues of contention. Rep. James was instrumental in defeating efforts to create an independent school district in Baton Rouge. Rep. James has been twice elected as the Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus and serves on the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus Foundation Board of Directors. Rep. James was the recipient of the Louisiana Young Democrats Man of the Year in 2012, Legislative Leadership award from the American Cancer Society (2012) and has continuously been honored for his support of public education by the Louisiana Federal of Teachers and the Louisiana Association of Educators. In 2014, He was awarded the Louisiana AARP Legislator of the Year Award as well as the 2014 Louisiana School Board Association Legislator of the Year Award.
