GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - Two 18-year-old suspects were arrested in connection with a body found in a Gonzales canal Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office reported Jamar Jones and Kevin Ross, both of Gonzales, are charged with first-degree murder and obstruction of justice. Jones was arrested Tuesday, while investigators said Ross was found at a relative's home Friday around noon.
The pair is accused of being responsible for the shooting death of Alex Rubio, 18, of Gonzales. Chief Deputy Bobby Webre with APSO said that Rubio had been shot twice in the head by a small caliber handgun.
Officials said Rubio was last seen by his family Sunday evening riding in a vehicle with Jones and Ross. According to deputies, Rubio was allegedly shot by both Jones and Ross while riding in the vehicle. Investigators said his body was later dumped in New River Canal between Lively Road and Cornerview Road, where it was discovered by a passing driver Tuesday around 2 p.m.
After an autopsy Wednesday morning, APSO officials started investigating Rubio's death as a homicide. Rubio was identified Wednesday after the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab was able to positively identify his body through fingerprints. He was a student at East Ascension High School, according to officials with Ascension Parish Public Schools.
Jones was arrested Tuesday by the Gonzales Police Department for carrying a gun illegally. Police said the gun that Jones had when arrested was consistent with the same type used in Rubio's murder. In addition to the murder charge, Jones was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail on charges of illegal carry of a weapon and possession of marijuana. His bond was set at $50,000.
Officials said Ross is being held without bond.
Deputies said additional charges are expected for Jones as he is also accused of stealing a vehicle in Gonzales on Friday and burning it in Darrow Sunday.
