GONZALES, LA (WAFB) -

Deputies with the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office continue to investigate after a body was found in a Gonzales canal Tuesday afternoon.

The victim was identified Wednesday as 18-year-old Alex Rubio, of Gonzales. The Louisiana State Police Crime Lab were able to positively identify Rubio by using fingerprint identification.

Rubio was a student at East Ascension High School, according to officials with Ascension Public Schools.

After an autopsy that was done Wednesday morning, APSO officials said they will be investigating Rubio's death, which has been ruled a homicide. However, no word on Rubio's exact cause of death.

Crews were called out around 2 p.m. Tuesday after Rubio's body was discovered in the New River Canal between Lively Road and Cornerview Road in Gonzales.

Minutes later the area was swarming with residents who say they were shocked by what was unfolding before their eyes.

"It's kind of crazy I mean a lot of stuff has been going on around here in Ascension Parish and everywhere," said Corey McBride. "It's kind of just crazy when you have it happening right here at your house in your front door where you have your children playing."

The gruesome discovery was first made by a Good Samaritan who just so happened to be passing by the canal yesterday. He noticed what he thought was a body and called police.

One woman who lives near where the body was found did not want to be identified but said the whole situation is troubling.

"I was just kind of shocked to see this coming this close to me. I've always felt comfortable here because I was raised here but right now I got second thoughts," she said.

The woman said she has lived in Gonzales for far too long and will not allow something like this to scare her and her family away.

"We've never had anything like this in this neighborhood before," she added. "I'm just going to continue doing what I've been doing the way I've been doing it."

Whoever killed Rubio is still out there and this resident hopes anyone who was involved will do the right thing.

"I just think it's awful and whoever's doing it and whoever did it needs to comes forward and turn themselves in and they need to stop the killing," she added.

The investigation is ongoing with limited details as officials still have not reported how long Rubio's body was in the canal or how he got there.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office at (225) 621-4636 or call Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-STOP (7867).
