Community events related to ambush attack on officers

On Sunday, July 17, six law enforcement officers were shot during an ambush shooting, three of whom, died. They include two Baton Rouge Police Department officers, Montrell Jackson, 32, and Matthew Gerald, 41, and an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Deputy, Brad Garafola, 45. 

One law enforcement officer remains in the hospital after being wounded during the ambush attack, officials said. Deputy Nicholas Tullier, 41, remains in critical condition at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He has 18 years of service with the sheriff's office.

Bruce Simmons, 57, was released from Baton Rouge General Hospital on July 21 after undergoing at least two surgeries. Simmons has served as a police officer for 23 years.

Chad Montgomery, a Baton Rouge police officer, was also released from the hospital.

Many community events have been planned in the wake of the shooting.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 4: 

  • Zachary will be hosting a Community Peace Gathering. It will begin at 6 p.m. at the Zachary Youth Park High School Baseball Field, 1650 Mt. Pleasant Rd. Area pastors and clergy will speak messages on how to prevent violence and cultivate peace. They will have "Let Peace Begin With Me" wristbands available for purchase. All proceeds will go directly to the children of the slain Baton Rouge law enforcement officers. 

SATURDAY, AUGUST 13: 

  • Barrels for the Blue event will provide proceeds to benefit the families of the officers involved in the ambush shooting via donations made to the Baton Rouge Police Union. The event will be held in Port Allen. for more information call (985) 209-3531. 

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31:

  • 31% on the 31st: Sarita's Grill and Cantina, 18780 LA-22, Maurepas, will donate 31% of sales to the families of fallen officers in Baton Rouge.
