BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A Turkish PhD candidate studying at LSU, Fevzi Sarac, says the attempted coup has brought about many concerns.

"I am pretty much scared and concerned about the future of turkey and people in turkey including my family and friends, so this was the first reaction when i heard about the coup in turkey," said Sarac.

Sarac spent six years studying in Istanbul and is working on a doctorate in political sciences. He says he is against any attempt to uproot the democratic government in Turkey, which he says has been on shaky ground over the last few years.

He is also fearful that the current, controversial president will use the failed coup to suppress any opposition groups.

As a key U.S. ally in the region, he says it's critical that democracy remain in Turkey.
