GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - The Ascension Christian Lions hope to build on a winning record in 2015 despite missing out on the Division IV playoffs.
The Lions were one of three teams left out of the playoffs despite their 6-4 record.
Head Coach Josh Puryear is looking forward to the upcoming season, returning several seniors who have been in the program for four years.
"Payton Bahlinger he's going to play quarterback for us," said Josh Puryear. "The last couple of years he's played kind of like our athlete overall. But he's going to step up this year as a senior and he's going to play quarterback. He's going to be required to do some big things on and off the field."
"We don't have as many players as other teams," said senior lineman Dylan Capiel. "But we have a lot of people who go both ways that helps us a lot at staying in shape."
And with the playoff snub a season ago, some players say they need to have a quicker start to the 2016 season.
"Last year we came out pretty slow in the first couple of games, but we rose throughout the season," said senior tight end and defensive end Nick Schexnayder. "We really made a climb. I think this year we really want to hit the first team Gueydan hard."
