INDEPENDENCE, LA (WAFB) - A 7-year-old girl accidentally drown in an old gravel pit over the holiday weekend, according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office responded to a medical emergency on Alessi Road in Independence on the afternoon of July 2. The child had been swimming with family and friends when her mother noticed her daughter was missing.
A search was launched before a spear fisherman found the child's body about 10 yards from shore. Those at the gravel pit attempted to revive the child using CPR before the fire department and an ambulance arrived on the scene.
The 7-year-old was airlifted to North Oaks Medical Center but could not be revived.
Deputies said that charges will not be filed.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office warns gravel pits are extremely dangerous since there is no way of knowing what has been left behind after years of dredging.
