PORT ALLEN, LA (WAFB) - Three people were taken to the hospital and one of them will face charges once released after an 18-wheeler carrying sugar hit a vehicle and flipped early Tuesday morning.
The West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office reported Tyler Dupont will be charged once he heals. Deputies said his passenger, Taylor Caldwell, suffered the most serious injuries in the crash and was flown to the hospital by helicopter. They added the driver of the 18-wheeler had minor injuries. All are expected to survive.
Investigators said the crash happened on US 190 West near the Cajun Circus Casino around 12:30 a.m.
Lt. Kent Alvarez with WBRSO said Dupont was made a legal U-turn from US 190 East to US 190 West, but in doing so, straddled both westbound lanes and was hit by a tractor trailer carrying unrefined sugar. He added the trucker slammed on the breaks, but the big rig still went on top of the other vehicle and flipped, spilling sugar across the highway.
Crews are working to clean the sugar off the highway.
