Thousands turn out for 4th celebrations in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The red white and blue of the American spirit could be found in every corner, and on every person, of downtown Baton Rouge as the city celebrated Independence Day.

One of the most popular events was the USS Kidd's Fourth of July Spectacular. Despite the heat, thousands came out for fun and games, including a hot dog eating contest and live music.

However, the event was more than just a celebration. It's one of the biggest fundraisers for the Kidd each year.

"All the dollars we raise go towards the conservation of the ship, and also the operations of the museum, which is also a veteran's memorial," explained the Kidd's interim director, Mark Tullos.

As the sun set, another popular Independence Day tradition played out in a new location. The Baton Rouge Concert Band delivered its 4th of July concert at A.Z. Young Park due to construction at the Capitol.
