BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Survivorship Training and Rehabilitation Program (STAR Program) is now the region's only certified cancer rehab center and is located in Baton Rouge at the Woman's Hospital.
The STAR Program is designed to help survivors of cancer treatment cope with both physical and emotional side effects of treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. The program is certified through the Massachusetts-based Oncology Rehab Partners and includes an intensive training program for physicians to speech therapists.
Teams work together with each individual patient to improve physical function, reduce pain, develop strength, and achieve a better emotional balance.
The services provided by the STAR Program, including physical therapy, mental health counseling, and occupational therapy are typically covered by health insurance.
"Woman's STAR Program is open to everyone, no matter the prognosis, cancer stage, or phase of recovery. Newly diagnosed patients may want to increase their strength and endurance; survivors living with cancer as a chronic disease may need help managing treatment-related conditions; and individuals who are cured or in remission may wish to boost their immune systems," says Michelle Spear, physical therapist.
