BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The 7th annual Passing the Flag Event, which is part of the nation-wide Patriot Tour, will be held July 9 by the Baton Rouge Chapter of the Nation of Patriots.
During the Patriot Tour, a single American flag travels across the country through a 14,000 mile, 100 day, 48 state journey to honor America's past, present, and deceased Armed Forces personnel. Motorcycle enthusiasts across the country transport the flag from city to city to raise money to help financially support families of wounded veterans. All donations collected in Louisiana benefit local veterans.
Last year's local event attracted around 200 bikers and 400 attendees. Event organizers hope this year's event will be even bigger. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. on July 9 at Baton Rouge Harley Davidson on 5853 Siegen Lane. Riders will depart from there with the flag and head to Lafayette.
Members from each branch of the Armed Forces will be at the ceremony in full dress uniform. Honor Guard will be provided by United States Marine Corp. The Baton Rouge Pipe and Drum Corp will also be performing.
WAFB's own chief meteorologist, Jay Grymes, will be the Master of Ceremonies. Mayor Kip Holden will be a guest speaker, along with Master Sergeant Tanya Whitney U.S. Army (ret.) as the keynote speaker.
