BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The suspected drunk driver accused of crashing into an accident scene and injuring 6 people was released on bond Tuesday.
William Smith, 26, was arrested and charged with charged with DWI (1st offense), negligent injury, hit and run, reckless operation and driving with a suspended driver's license after he crashed through the scene of a one-vehicle accident near the I-10/I-12 split near Essen Lane.
Police and medics were called out around 1:15 a.m. Sunday to the initial crash which Smith crashed into, causing the vehicle to hit a BRPD officer, one EMT, and two of the bystanders. The victims and Smith were transported to local hospitals with severe injuries.
On Monday, officials said one of the two Acadian Ambulance employees hit had been released from the hospital. The other remains in ICU.
The officer was also expected to be released from the hospital Monday, officials say. No word yet on the conditions of the other people who were hit.
BRPD said they believe Smith was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Smith was released from East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Tuesday on a $26,500 bond.
