BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Louisiana Department of Education released applications for School Improvement Grants and Charter Schools Program Grants.
The department plans to award more than $17.5 million in federal School Improvement Grants to school systems who strive to improve their lowest performing schools.
In addition to the state grants, Louisiana received an $8 million grant from the federal Charter Schools Program which is intended to be used over the next three years to support the expansion of access to high-quality educational opportunities.
The School Improvement Grants will aim to restructure the lowest performing schools, investing in attracting and developing high-quality leaders and educators, and replacing persistently struggling schools with new school models.
The Charter Schools Program Grants will support the launch of 30 new charter schools over the next three years, fund existing charter schools, and help develop charter schools within existing districts.
