BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - ExxonMobil Baton Rouge has given ExxonMobil YMCA a grant to begin providing swimming lessons to Head Start kids in Baton Rouge.
Additionally, Louisiana Health Care Connections will be providing swimming lessons to those kids' parents, and Tony's Seafood will provide lessons to the grandparents.
Between the three companies, they've provided more than $30,000 for swimming lessons that they hope will help save lives. Nine people drown every day in the U.S., and kids from households where no one swims are eight times more likely to be at risk. In ethnically diverse communities, the drowning rate of kids is two to three times higher than the national average.
ExxonMobil YMCA hopes the program will teach the importance of water safety and will help families feel more comfortable in and around water.
