BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The Baton Rouge Fire Department is investigating a fire at the Cozumel restaurant near Cortana mall.

Firefighters say the fire started just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday night in the 9700 block of Cortana Place.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered flames coming from the building. Because the restaurant was locked, firefighters had to use force to enter the building. Stanley Valentine was driving by and saw the fire. "It was just a sort of small flame,” Valentine said. “And after a while the whole building was pretty much engulfed from the inside. Firefighters were here shooting water to the inside from the ladder... the truck."

The fire was brought under control just after midnight. Investigators say that the restaurant is a total loss. No one was inside the building at the time of the fire and officials say the business has been out of operation for a while, but they were not sure about the exact amount of time.

What caused the fire is currently unknown and is under investigation. Owners of the restaurant say they expect to be back up and running in about a month.
