7 LSU baseball players selected for MLB draft on final day

It was a big day for seven LSU baseball players. Jared Poche’, Jesse Stallings, Cole Freeman, Riley Smith, Greg Deichmann, Parker Bugg, and Kramer Robertson were all selected Saturday.

Jake Fraley was also selected Thursday by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Poche’, junior left-handed pitcher, is from Lutcher, LA, has a 27-9 record in his three years at LSU. He is the only Tigers pitcher in history to win at least nine games in each of his first three seasons. His record this season is 9-4 with a 3.26 ERA in 96.2 innings with 34 walks and 81 strikeouts. Poche’ was selected in the 14th round for San Diego.

Stallings, sophomore right-handed pitcher, is from Colfax, LA and is 3-0 this season with a 3.64 ERA in 25 appearances (2 starts). He was also a Freshman All-American in 2015 and has worked 29.2 innings this year, recording 18 strikeouts and holding opponents to a .232 batting average. Stallings was selected in the 15th round for Cincinnati.

Freeman, junior second baseman, is from Mandeville, LA and has been one of LSU’s offensive leaders this season. His batting average is .321 on the year with six doubles, three triples, one homer, 26 RBI 43 runs, and 26 stolen bases. Freeman will join the Los Angeles Dodges and was selected in the 18th round.

Smith, junior right-handed pitcher, transferred to LSU last fall from San Jacinto (Texas) Junior College and suffered with a shoulder injury for much of the season. He has been a solid contributor nonetheless. He has a 2-1 mark in 11 appearances with 11 strikeouts in 22 innings. Smith was drafted by Arizona in the 24th round.

Deichmann, sophomore first baseman, is from Metairie, LA and leads in homers (10), as well as RBI (54) for LSU this season. Last week, he was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional, batting .600 (9-for-15) with three homers and 10 RBI. Deichmann was drafted by Minnesota in the 26th round.

Bugg, junior right-handed pitcher, is from San Diego, CA and has been a mainstay in the LSU bullpen for the past three seasons. He was made 26 relief appearances this season, posting four saves and 3.55 ERA in 38 innings with 34 strikeouts and .210 opponent batting average. Bugg was drafted in the 27th round for Miami.

Robertson, junior shortstop, is from McGregor, TX and received First-Team All-SEC and Second-Team All-America recognition for the season. He is batting a team-high .331 with 20 doubles, two triples, two homers, 59 runs, 39 RBI, and 14 stolen bases. He will join Cleveland after being selected in the 32nd round.

Six LSU signees were also selected in the draft, including pitcher Riley Pint (1st round, Colorado), pitcher Kyle Weatherly (8th round, Los Angeles Angels), pitcher Hunter Kiel (29th round, Arizona), pitcher Zack Hess (35th round, New York Yankees), shortstop Jake Slaughter (36th round, Chicago Cubs) and shortstop Josh Smith (38th round, Detroit).
