BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Jared Poche' scattered five hits over six innings and racked up eight strikeouts, and Jake Fraley provided all the runs LSU would need with a two-run homer in the first inning as the Tigers beat Utah Valley 7-1 in their NCAA Regional opener that was delayed more than six hours by rain and lightning.
LSU (43-18) advances to a winner's bracket game scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Saturday at Alex Box Stadium against SLU or Rice, which had their opener postponed to Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. Utah Valley (37-22) is now slated for an elimination game at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, weather permitting.
Antoine Duplantis, who made some key defensive plays in right field, walked to start the bottom of the first inning and Fraley followed with a blast over the right field wall off Wolverines starter Danny Beddes for a 2-0 lead. Mark Krueger had an RBI single in the second inning off Poche', but Utah Valley never scored again off the Lutcher lefthander and three relievers. LSU outhit the WAC visitors 12-6, as Greg Deichmann added a seventh inning homer, finishing 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.
