BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The bill meant to raise the legal age of an adult in Louisiana received its final passage Thursday afternoon.
The Louisiana House voted 97-3 to send SB 324, also known as the Raise the Age Act, to the Senate for final approval. The Senate is expected to approve minor changes to the bill to include 17-year-old offenders in the juvenile justice system.
Under the bill authored by Sen. J.P. Morrell, D-New Orleans, district attorneys will still be able to charge 17-year-olds as adults for serious crimes.
Currently, Louisiana is one of nine states that charges 17-year-olds as adults.
