BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana State Police are usually busy with crashes on Memorial Day weekend, but 2016 was particularly devastating for Troopers.
"Most of these crashes were preventable," said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. "Driving is a full time job and we owe it to our loved ones to make good decisions while driving and prevent further tragic loss of life."
By Friday, there had been eight deaths on the roadways. There were seven deaths during the entire 2015 Memorial Day weekend.
Trooper Bryan Lee said this is the consequence of poor driving and other poor decisions.
"It's very tragic when you look at the purpose of this holiday is to honor those that have fallen and given their lives for our freedom. And now we have to still be here and deal with the mistakes made by people that choose to drink and drive and not wear their seat belts and drive aggressively and distracted," Lee said.
