BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Southern University played host to an event Saturday aimed at shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
Dozens of girls gathered for the OMG Conference.
Contrary to what you might think, OMG in this case stands for Outstanding Mature Girlz.
With a mix of music and breakout seminars, the event addressed issues top of mind for teenage girls. The topics included mental health, body image and STDs.
"We have the conference close to the end of the school year, near the beginning of the summer, so we want them to take this information as a tool through the school year and through life," said Sashika Baunchand, founder of Outstanding Mature Girlz. "I like talking to the girls, make them feel comfortable about themselves. Like let them know that someone you don't even know, they're here for you. We're not here to talk about you, put down on you."
This was the fourth year for the free event, which is held in tandem with National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
