LIVINGSTON, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana State Police reported a woman badly injured in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday night has died.
Troopers identified her as Cheryl Douglas, 35, of Baton Rouge. They added Daniel Mendoza, 38, of Harlingen, TX, suffered moderate injuries. They reported the wreck happened on I-12 East past Livingston around 10 p.m.
Tpr. Bryan Lee said the preliminary investigation showed Douglas was driving on I-12 West in a 2006 Nissan Sentra when, for unknown reasons, the car went off the road. He added the car continued through the median and collided head-on with an 18-wheeler, driven by Mendoza, on I-12 East.
Investigators reported Douglas was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown out of the car. They added the 18-wheeler overturned and ended up in the median. According to Lee, Douglas was taken to North Oaks Hospital with serious injuries and succumbed to them Saturday.
Troopers reported despite being properly buckled, Mendoza was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. His current condition was not released by authorities.
Investigators said it is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash, but per protocol for deadly wrecks on Louisiana highways, blood samples were taken from both drivers and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
The investigation is ongoing.
