Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones shot to death in Dallas, TX

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

New Orleans Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones died at the age of 23 after being shot in Dallas, Texas. The incident occurred Saturday around 3:20 a.m.

Dallas police say that officers were called to an incident at an apartment complex in the 2500 block of Bennett Avenue. Officers arrived on scene and found one person, who was shot. 

The resident in the apartment told police that he was asleep in his bedroom when someone kicked open the front door and entered the apartment. The resident grabbed a gun and called out to the individual, but nobody answered. 

As the individual kicked in the bedroom door, the resident fired the gun. The individual exited the apartment prior to collapsing in the breezeway. The individual, later identified as Dejean-Jones, was transported to the hospital where he died from his injuries. 

Dallas homicide detectives continue to investigate the case. 

Saturday afternoon, the New Orleans Pelicans released the following statement on Dejean-Jones' passing: 

“It is with deep sadness that the Pelicans organization acknowledges the sudden passing of Bryce Dejean-Jones. We are devastated at the loss of this young man’s life who had such a promising future ahead of him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bryce’s family during this difficult time.

The following is a statement released by the manager of the apartment complex where the incident occurred: 

Dear Residents,

You may have seen or heard the police activity this morning around 5:00am at our community. An individual who believed to be breaking into the apartment of an estranged acquaintance inadvertendly broke into the wrong apartment. After breaking in, the intruder was shot and later taken via ambulance to a local hospital. Fortunately, no residents were injured.
