MORGAN CITY, LA (WAFB) -

Authorities said an inmate and his aunt are accused of trying to get illegal items into a prison.

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office reported Therold James, 31, of Bayou Vista, and Geraldine James, 56, of Berwick, were both arrested Tuesday. Each faces a charge of conspiracy to introduce contraband into a penal facility.

Deputies said a correctional officer at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center reported "he was propositioned by an inmate to bring contraband into the jail." According to reports, detectives with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division started an investigation with the correctional officer’s help.

SMPSO reported the officer met with Geraldine James, at which time she gave him a package and $200. Deputies added the package was meant for her nephew, Therold James, an inmate in SMPLEC, and the $200 was allegedly a cash bribe. Officials reported the officer instead took the package and the money to detectives.

Detectives said there was tobacco, a cell phone and a phone charger in the package.

Officials said Terold James was re-booked into the parish prison and is currently being held without bond.

They added Geraldine James was booked and later released on a $10,000 bond.
