BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The future of REAL ID now rests in the House at the State Capitol.
With a vote of 28-8, the Senate advanced a bill allowing the federally-compliant ID cards to be distributed in Louisiana.
HB 702, sponosored by Rep. Jimmy Harris, D-New Orleans, would also allow people to request a card not-compliant with REAL ID instead.
However, those individuals would need to present another form of identification like a passport if they want to fly domestically starting in 2018.
Opponents to the bill have expressed concerns over privacy.
A similar bill, SB 227, is already pending on the House floor.
