EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH, LA (WAFB) - Local leaders gathered in at the future site of a new volunteer fire station for a ground breaking ceremony in Chaneyville.
There is a great need for the new fire station because there are currently more than 100 homes more than seven miles from the nearest station.
Officials say that the new fire station should change a lot for them and members of the community.
"We see on one side of the street, people who own houses have a 10 rating which means their insurance is way up," said Mayor-President Kip Holden. "By building this fire department, that rating will go down to four which means they will save money. But more importantly, we're saving lives and making a difference in the quality of life for citizens who deserve it."
The current fire station in Chaneyville was built in the 1960s so the new station will be a welcomed upgrade.
