BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser toured a processing plant belonging to the Baton Rouge Shrimp Company Tuesday afternoon.
With the help of the American Seafood Coast Guard, Nungesser is trying to spread the word about the benefits of buying and consuming local seafood.
They said buying domestic seafood is not only safer, but it is also a lot better quality than imported seafood.
"Everything fits together in Louisiana," Nungesser said. "You come to Louisiana for the music, the food, the culture, but there's no better seafood in the world than right here in Louisiana so it's such a part of what we do in promoting Louisiana around the country and around the world. It's that Louisiana seafood that makes it special. So it all starts right here at facilities like this in Louisiana."
They said despite what people may think, only 10 percent of the seafood ordered in stores and restaurants is actually domestic.
The American Seafood Coast Guard said it is important for consumers to ask questions about where their seafood is coming from.
