For the third consecutive year, Baton Rouge is being honored by the nonprofit KaBOOM! as a 2016 Playful City USA community.
The organization applauded 257 cities or towns for fighting childhood obesity by prioritizing play for children.
Mayor-President Kip Holden credited the city's Healthy BR Program, BREC and East Baton Rouge Schools for recognizing the value of physical education.
"Working together, we are encouraging kids to lead healthier lifestyles by eating healthier and exercising more often," Holden said in a written release.
Research shows kids are playing outside less than any previous generation.
