BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Pest control companies have been busy in South Louisiana after a mild winter and plenty of moisture made conditions more favorable for termites.
Recently, the Formosan termite began swarming in and around Baton Rouge. Left unchecked, their off-spring can cause big problems for homeowners.
Laura Simpson, who owns Dugas Pest Control, said her crews have been busy treating homes.
"Your home is your biggest investment," she said. "You don't want to have to be dealing with damage from these termites. If they're not found quickly
they can do tens of thousands of dollars of damage."
The termites thrive in warm and wet climates. Eventually, the termites swarm or leave a crowded colony to start their own.
"You might see inside your house pinholes and a lot of times you will see the termites, the swarmers actually come out of those pinholes," Simpson
said. "You will see sometimes a little dirt around the pinhole."
Simpson recommends several treatments options, including the popular Sentricon Elimination System. It's designed to eliminate the entire colony.
"You need to keep up that annual inspection," Simpson said. "Make sure somebody is coming out there to take care of your house, to thoroughly inspect it and be responsible for damage if possible."
