HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) -

Louisiana State Police said the public’s help is needed in helping them find the vehicles involved in a hit and run crash Wednesday night near the Southeastern Louisiana University campus that resulted in the death of a skateboarder.

Troopers identified the victim as Erin Gerhard, 26, of Independence. They said the crash happened on University Avenue west of US 51 a little after 10 p.m. University officials said Gerhard was a former student of the university.

Tpr. Dustin Dwight said the initial investigation showed Gerhard was riding a skateboard in the road when he was hit by an unknown vehicle. He added the impact threw Gerhard into the other lane, where another vehicle hit him.

According to Dwight, both vehicles drove off after the crash. Troopers are looking for a truck and a dark-colored sedan.

Gerhard was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office.

Per protocol for all deadly crashes on Louisiana highways, blood samples were taken from Gerhard and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to call Louisiana State Police Troop L at 985-893-6250.
