GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - A Gonzales man faces animal cruelty charges after authorities found a malnourished dog in his back yard.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office says an investigation began after they received a notification about a neglected dog at a residence on North Robert Wilson Road.
Deputies found the malnourished dog tied to a post behind a wooden shed. Officials say the dog had visible sores on its nose, legs, and dried blood on the back of its ears. Deputies also note the dog was lying it its own feces with no food, water, or adequate shelter.
Ascension Parish Animal Control officers arrived on scene and took custody of the dog.
Investigators contacted the home's owner, 39-year-old John Green, who said the dog suffered from heartworms and was being treated at an area veterinary clinic. Deputies contacted the clinic and learned that the dog was last treated in October 2015, and the dog was not vaccinated.
Green was arrested on May 3 and was charged with animal cruelty. He was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail, where his bond was set at $1,000.
