PORT FOURCHON, LA (WAFB) - BHP Billiton announced today that they have donated $500,000 to the LA 1 Coalition to support their efforts to improve LA 1.
The highway, which serves as the only access road to Point Fourchon and Grand Isle, has been impacted by several natural disasters and rising sea levels.
BHP Billiton's donation will be paired with other funding dedicated to help fund the last phases of the improvement project and complete the 19-mile long elevated highway from Golden Meadow to Port Fourchon.
"BHP Billiton is committed to working closely with the communities to identify and support projects that meet local needs and properties," says Asset President of BHP Billiton's conventional petroleum business, Geraldine Slattery. "While Highway 1 is important to the oil and gas industry's operations in Port Fourchon, it is also a critical piece of infrastructure for the local community's safety and the region's economy. It is also and access point for the region's coastal wetland restoration projects."
Henri Boulet, Executive Director of the LA 1 Coalition released a statement thanking BHP Billiton for their donation.
"The LA 1 Coalition is extremely grateful to BHP Billiton for their generous recognition of the importance of LA Highway 1 to south Louisiana and for recognizing the value of this donation as a tool for leveraging other stakeholder's participation," said Boulet. "This contribution will also help ensure the completion of this critical infrastructure that is beneficial to the state's coastal and economic goals which must be addressed together."
